Inside The Look: President Katie Blais Talks Club Goals, Her Journey, and Advice for Fellow Creatives

In an interview with Katie Blais, the President of The Look at SDSU, we dive into her personal journey, the club's growth, and her vision for the future. As a leader who has witnessed The Look evolve from its early stages to now, Blais shares her insights on the club’s progress and the creative community she values so much. In this short interview, she reflects on her journey, the club's impact, and the advice she has for fellow members aspiring to pursue their creative passions.

1. Tell me a bit about your personal journey at The Look. What made you want to join and eventually apply for the President position?

I have been in The Look since my very first semester at SDSU! I'm now on semester six and never thought I would be the president, so it is definitely a surreal experience. I originally found out about The Look during my senior year of high school, and I knew that if I attended SDSU it was something I needed to be a part of. I was eager to join a creative club, meet like-minded students, and hone in on my writing and journalism skills.

After a year of being on the writing team, I knew I wanted to apply for the VP of Writing & Copy position. I loved being in this role - getting to read other member's writing was a really cool experience as I became familiar with so many different writing styles and perspectives. I actually never intended on applying for the president position, but after talking to our previous president about it, I decided to apply. I love The Look so much and care a lot about its success which is why I decided to take on the role.

2. How have you witnessed the club change or grow since you joined?

The club has changed and grown in so many ways since my Freshman year. When I first joined there were only about 50-60 members and the club was still in its very early stages. Aside from growing in members, I think The Look has become more of a professional publication as well. Anthony and I really wanted to create a space where students can enhance their craft, which in return can hopefully propel their future careers.

3. What is one of your goals as President this year and how do you plan to achieve it? What is your vision for the future of The Look?

Going into this role, I had a lot of goals and visions for The Look. While I feel like I've been able to achieve some of them, there is still a lot I would like to accomplish in my time as President. One goal I had that we have been able to achieve is becoming more involved with JMS. As The Look becomes more career-oriented, I'm happy that we have been given so many opportunities to be a part of JMS events. I want The Look to always hold on to its ultra-creative roots while still fostering a professional community that gives students a leg up when entering the creative job market. One of my goals that I'm still working on is making sure The Look is as organized as possible as we continue to grow in size. I want all members to feel informed and included, and I am always open to learning new ways to make that possible.

4. What is your favorite part about being in The Look?

The Look has given me the space to grow tremendously - not only as a creative, but also as a person. I am so grateful to this club for allowing me to explore my creativity and gain valuable experience in leadership. I've met so many amazing people through The Look and love being a part of something that feels bigger than myself. I think it is amazing that over 200 students can come together, collaborate, and create a truly unique and authentic magazine.

5. What is one piece of advice you would give to members of this club as fellow creatives?

I recently came across a quote that really resonated with me: “Do it scared.” I think that if there is something you want to accomplish, no matter how big or small, it's important to remember that you can do it and be scared at the same time. Pursuing a creative career can be intimidating, but it's also important to remember the value of your craft and to never stop believing in yourself and your capabilities.

Katie’s journey and vision for The Look highlight the power of a creative community and artistic expression. Her dedication to building an environment of collaboration, creativity, and career development is an inspiration to all members of the club. Whether you’re just starting your creative journey or you’re already established, Katie’s advice is a reminder to trust in your abilities and pursue your dreams, even if you're a little scared.
